Synology NAS beginners guide | Part 17 | Video Station

*** Synology Removed Video Station from the 7.2.2 build of Disk Station Manager. So while we have left this post as is. Going forward, in order to stream your video library. You will have to install and use an alternative third party application. While Plex seems to be the go to option, we prefer to use JellyFin as it is open source. ***

Synology Video Station is a free application that you can download from Package Centre to allow you to stream a video library from your NAS. So in this video we are going to demonstrate how you install and configure, Video Station on a Synology NAS.

  • Log into your NAS using your Administrators credentials.
  • We now need to install Video Station.
  • From the desktop of DSM select Package Centre.
  • Using the Search bar of Package Center locate and install Video Station.
  • Now close Package Center and open Control Panel.
  • Close Package Centre and open Control Panel.
  • Locate and select Login Portal.
  • Select Applications and highlight Video Station from the list of applications being displayed.
  • Click on Edit.
  • In the Alias field, enter a word you can use to access Video Station. For example you might use the word video.
  • In Customized Port (HTTP) type 9007.
  • In Customized Port (HTTPS) type 9008.

Note: Ports 9007 and 9008 are the default ports that Synology suggests you use with Video Station. However if another service on your network is using these ports, or you want to change a port number for security reasons. You should make your changes here.

  • Choose Save.

When installing Video Station, the application will automatically create a network share called video. However, in order to allow someone other than your administrator to upload or remove video content. You will need to assign a user account with access permissions.

  • Select Application Privileges from the side bar in Control Panel.
  • Under the subheading Package, locate and highlight Video Station.
  • Assign either a User or a Group with the access permissions Allow. In our example we used the users group to allow all users of our NAS access to Video Station.
  • Click Save.

In order for Video Station to run, you will need to install video extensions onto your NAS. However as Synology will only make the Advanced Media Extensions package available, if you have signed your NAS in with a Synology account. You will need to create a Synology account before you complete this stage.

  • From the sidebar of Control Panel open Synology Account.
  • Under the heading Synology Account click on Sign to or sign up for a Synology Account.
  • From the pop up window sign your NAS in with a Synology account.
  • Close Control Panel and open Package Center.
  • Install the Advanced Media Extensions package onto your NAS.

Note: You do not need to keep your NAS signed in with your Synology Account, once the Advanced Media Extensions have been downloaded. However you will need to sign back in again, if you ever need to update the Advanced Media Extensions.

  • Still in Control Panel, in the sidebar select Application Privileges.
  • Under Packages highlight Video Station and choose Edit.
  • You will now need to assign access privileges to the Video Station.
  • Close Control Panel.

To make managing your video files easier. It’s a good idea to create two subfolders in the network share called video.

  • From your computer open the network shares on your NAS.
  • Locate and open the video folder.
  • In the video folder create a Movies and TV series folder.

Note: You will now be able to access Video Station from within a web browser or the DS Video app. However, as our NAS is currently not accessible from the internet. We are only able to connect to Video Station from within our home network. This is done by opening a web browser and entering one of the following into the address bar:

//the-ip-address-of-your-NAS/video
//the-ip-address-of-your-NAS:9007

Note: At the moment you will not be able to access Video Station using port 9008, as your NAS has not been configured with an SSL certificate. However, we will be looking at assigning a Synology NAS with an SSL certificate in a future video.

We recommend that you only upload a small sample of videos to the videos folder of Video Station. This is because indexing large numbers of files will take a considerable amount of time. Something that will delay your testing, when trying to confirm that you have configured Video Station correctly.

  • Still logged in to Disk Station manager as an Administrator
  • Open the Main Menu.
  • Now from within Main Menu locate and select Video Station.
  • Video Station then load into a new browser tab and display a Feature Update window.
  • Tick “Do not show this warning again” and select Go to Settings.
  • In the Video Info Plugin tab tick Apply next to The Movie Database (System default).
  • Enter the API Key for your TMDb account.

Note: Video Station will work without entering an API Key. However the application will not be able to pull meta data from the internet. So your video content will not have basic information such as poster art, descriptions, actors names and ratings. If you want to find out how you create an API key please see Synology NAS Tip | How to add the Movie Database plug-in to Video Station

  • Tick Apply next to The Movie Database (System Default) for TV Show
  • Click OK to save your settings
  • Still in Settings, choose Library.
  • Click on the folder icon next to Movie.
  • Next to the Folder field, choose the Select button.
  • Select video and highlight Movies.
  • Click Select.
