Notifications on a Synology NAS are like little alerts that pop up when something important happens. For instance, you can set it to send a notification when a backup is done, a hard drive goes kaput, or you’re running out of storage. Pretty cool, right?
While we will specifically be looking at configuring email notifications. It is possible to configure your NAS to sent notifications via the Synology Finder App, a web browser, SMS text or various messaging applications.
But hey, you can set up Notifications to a Synology account or even a free email account like Gmail or Outlook. We’ll go ahead and set up an email account using the custom SMTP server option. That should make things easier for you if you’re not keen on Gmail or Outlook.
If you have a Gmail or Outlook account, setting up notifications is a breeze. All you need is the email account name and its password. But when it comes to setting up a NAS to use a Custom SMTP server, you’ll need a bit more info from your email account.
- An email account.

- The accounts SMTP server address.

- The port number for your SMTP server (25 or 587).

- The email accounts username.

- The email accounts password.

It’s worth noting that we are only allowing our NAS to send email notifications through an email account. So as our NAS cannot receive emails from the email account we use, this is a secure option.

- Sign into Disk Station Manager (DSM) using your administrators credentials.

- Open, Control Panel.

- Select System – Notification.

- Under the Email heading click on Set Up.

- In the Setup Sender window that appears, choose Custom SMTP server.

- Now enter the SMTP server address for your email account in SMTP server.

- The SMTP port will probably be either 25 or 587. Port 25 is the standard port with port 587 being a secure port.

- For Username enter your email account name.

- Enter the password for your email account, in the Password field.

Note: Secure connection SSL/TLS may or may not need to be ticked depending on how your email server has been configured. In the video we use an Ionos email account. This means we need to have SSL/TLS ticked, as our email account will send secure traffic through port 25.
- Senders name can be anything you like. For example System admin, or NAS notification.

- Sender email, is the email address to the account you are using in order to configure notifications.

- Click on Save.

- Under the heading Recipient Profiles, click the Add button.

- Leave the Rule set to Warning.

- Enter any email addresses that you would like your NAS to send notifications to.

Note: Use a semicolon to differentiate one email address from another.
- Now test that Notification has been configured correctly by clicking on Send Test Email.

- Select Add.
