A video on how you wake on LAN, your Synology NAS with an iPad


As it is possible to set your Synology NAS, so that it can be remotely power on using a function called Wake on LAN. In this video we demonstrate how from an Apple iPad you can send something called a magic packet to power on your NAS.

Notes: In order for an iPad to be able to remotely power up a Synology NAS. The Synology NAS needs to have had Wake on LAN enabled. We cover enabling WoL in part 15 of our series on How to setup a Synology NAS. So in order to use WoL with your iPad, we recommend that you first view that video.

Quick reference notes:

  • With your Synology NAS powered down, open the DS Finder 
  • From the Select Device panel select the options icon

Notes: The options icon we are referring to, are three dots in a vertical line, that can be found in the top right hand side of the Select Device panel.

  • From the drop down menu choose Wake on LAN (WOL)

Notes: You will be notified that that “Your NAS server is offline. Do you want was up the NAS server using Wake-on-LAN (WOL?) Note WOL can only be used if DS Finder and the server are connected to the same LAN

  • Select Yes and then choose OK
