How to access a network share from a Google Chromebook


While Google Chromebooks were originally intended to be Internet only devices. Due to their popularity it is now possible to access (SMB) network shares. So in this video we demonstrate how you can access a network share from a Google Chromebook.

Note: In order to access a network share from a Chromebook. Your Chromebook will need to be connect to the same network as your file server. You will also need to have the following information.

  • The sub-domain name or IP address of your file server.
  • A valid username and password in order to access your File Server.
  • The name of the network share you wish to access.
  • Locate and open Files from the shelf of ChromeOS.
  • Now from within Files choose the options/more (three stacked dots) button.
  • From the drop down menu highlight Services and choose SMB file share from the sub menu.
  • When you select SMB file share, an Add file share window will open. 
  • In the File share URL enter either the IP address or sub-domain name of your file server. For example:
\\myfileserver or \\192.168.xxx.xxx

Note: You will need to type two back slashes, to inform your Chromebook that it is looking to connect to a network share. 

  • Next type another back slash and type the name of the network share you wish to connect to.
\\192.168.xxx.xxx\Public
  • The Display Name field will automatically populate with the name of your network share. 
  • Now enter the username and password for someone authorised to access network shares on your file server.

Note: Remember Sign in info will be enabled by default. However, if you untick this option. Your Chromebook will not try to automatically mount your network share, whenever your Chromebook is connected to your network. 

When you select Add your network share will appear in the sidebar of Files
