How to enable or disable Peer to Peer updates on a Chromebook


In this video we take a look at how you enable or disable Peer to Peer updates on a Google Chromebook. Peer to Peer updates is a method for reducing bandwidth issues when updating multiple computers on a network. So rather than have each computer download an update from the internet. Once a computer has downloaded an update, it can share that update with other computers on the same network.

Notes: If you are using a school or work Chromebook, you may not be able to enable or disable Peer to Peer updates. This is because this command may have been disabled by your IT department. However, if your computer is performing more slowly than normal. It can be useful to see if Peer to Peer updates is effecting the performance of your computer.

  • From the ChromeOS desktop, press and hold down the Control and Alt keys, and then press on the keyboard.
  • When a terminal window opens
  • To see if Peer to Peer updates have been enabled, type the following:
p2p_update
  • To enable Peer to Peer updates type:
p2p_update enable
  • To disable Peer to Peer updates, type:
p2p_update disable
  • To close the Crosh simply type 
exit

Notes: Please note that the version of the operating system seen in this video is Chrome OS 118. The way that Chrome OS is displayed in this video may have change due to future updates.
