How to move or remove icons from the macOS menu bar

In this video we demonstrate how you move or remove icons from the menubar of macOS. The macOS menu bar is the section that runs along the top of the screen on your Mac. It contains application menus, commands, tasks, and status icons. By default, the menu bar displays icons for built-in system functions such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, volume control, battery status, and the date and time.

If you are a macOS user, you may have noticed that you have no obvious way to re-arrange the icons in the menu bar. So in this short video we will demonstrate how you can move or remove icons from the menu bar.

Quick reference notes:

To move icons in the macOS menu bar, you can follow these steps:

  1. From the macOS desktop, place the mouse pointer on the icon you want to move.
  2. Hold down the Command key on your keyboard.
  3. While holding the Command key, click and hold the mouse button.
  4. Use the mouse to move the icon horizontally across the menu bar.
  5. Release the mouse button to slot the icon into its new position.

Please note that not all icons in the menu bar can be moved or removed. This includes Control Center and the time and date display.

If you want to remove an icon from the menu bar, you can either use the Command key and the mouse or select the appropriate setting in System Preferences. Here are the steps to remove an icon:

  1. Place the mouse pointer on the icon you want to remove.
  2. Hold down the Command key on your keyboard and the mouse button.
  3. Using the mouse, move the icon down towards the middle of the screen.
  4. When the icon displays a cross, release the mouse button to remove it from the menu bar.
