How to Reset an Apple TV back to factory defaults

In this video we look at the Reset option on an Apple TV. Something that is useful to do in order to reset an Apple TV back to its factory defaults. Removing any accounts, applications and system configurations.

  • From the Home Screen of your Apple TV, locate and select Settings.
  • Next scroll down through the list of options and choose System.
  • Within System under the subheading Maintenance, we have three options.
  • Choose Reset.
  • A popup window appears offering two reset options:

Note: A Reset will simply set the Apple TV back to factory defaults. While “Reset and Update” will reset the Apple TV, but also update the device to the latest version of its operating system. We would recommend using Reset and Update if your Apple TV is misbehaving, or if you plan to sell or give it away.

Reset and Update will take longer to complete as the latest version of the operating system has to be downloaded from the internet and then installed to the Apple TV before it restarts. If during the reset process your Apple TV becomes completely unresponsive or fails to restart, you can force a restore via iTunes or Finder in macOS.

Note: In order to fix an Apple TV with a corrupt operating system. You will need a computer running Windows and iTunes, along with a USB-C to USB Cable.
