How to reinstall the firmware on an Apple HomePod mini, and return it to its original settings using macOS


If you intent to sell, give away or send your Apple HomePod to Apple for repair. You should ensure that your Apple HomePod has been returned to its factory default. One way to do this is to Restore your HomePod to its original settings. So in this video we demonstrate how from within macOS you can restore your HomePod.

Also if your Apple HomePod stops working properly, performing a restore might be a useful troubleshooting tool. However, as performing a restore will also return your HomePod to its factory default. You will have to reconfigure it once again, after it has been reset.

  • Connect your Apple HomePod to your computer using its USB cable.
  • Open Finder.
  • From within Finder under Locations, you should see listed your HomePod.
  • Select your HomePod.
  • Within Finder you will see some basic information about your HomePod.
  • Choose Restore HomePod.
  • You will be prompted with the following message “Are you sure you want to restore the HomePod to its factory settings? All your media and other data will be erased.
  • Select Restore.
  • When informed about the HomePod software version, choose Next.
  • Now Agree to the User Software License agreement.
  • You will once again be informed that you are about to restore your HomePod to its factory settings and it will delete all media and data.
  • Choose Restore.

Notes: As your computer will have to download the latest version of the HomePods firmware, it may take a considerable amount of time to restore your HomePod, as the whole process is dependant on the speed of your Internet connection.

  • When you are notified that your HomePod has be restored to its factory defaults, you can disconnect your HomePod from your computer.
