How to see hidden file extensions in Windows 11

In Windows 11, file extensions are hidden by default, making it tough to figure out what a file is. But hey, we’ve got a trick up our sleeves! In this video, we’ll show you how to reveal those hidden file extensions and make your computer a little more organized. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let’s get started!

A file extension relates to the letters immediately after the period in a files name. These letters are then used to determine what program to use in order to open, view or initialise a file. However as window 11 hides file extensions, this creates a security risk.

Remember while hiding file extensions was all about making computers easier for non-tech folks to use? You can’t tell what kind of file you’re opening, and that means scammers can trick you into clicking on files that you think are safe. Which is a sneaky way to get your computer infected.

So on our Windows computer, we prefer to have Windows configured to see a file extension, as well as display application icons.

Note: There are numerous ways that you can configure Windows 11 to display hidden file extensions. However, to keep things simple we make reference to the method introduced in Windows 11 update 22H2.

  • Open Windows File Explorer
  • Now from the Ribbon, select View to display a drop down list
  • From the drop down list locate and select Show
  • A sub menu will appear
  • In the sub menu choose File Name Extensions
  • File extensions will now be displayed
