It might sound hyperbolic to suggest that Google is slowly killing this website, but after the last six months that seems to be exactly what’s happening. As we mentioned last month, we started to notice a steady decline in the number of visitors to our website. While we initially thought this was related to the world going back to work after Covid. We can now confirm that Google is not indexing our content.
After a little research, we discovered that while we do have a few pages indexed. New content was not being index, and older content was slowly being de-indexed. So we Investigated further, and discovered that at the time when our visiter number started to decline. Google introduced something called Video Mode.
This new mode means that Google will no longer index posts that have both video and text. Instead choosing to only index content where a video is the main content. However, as our website was designed around posts containing both text and video. Currently the vast majority of our content is no longer being indexed. Which means it does not show up in search results, which has a knock on effect to site visits and advertising revenue.
While the solution to this problem seems obvious, in that we just need to separate the text from our videos. As we have posted over 500 pages. This would be a time consuming process and would require a serious rethink with regards to how we layout and structure our site. So we have decided to try a quick fix that we think might work.
Possible solution
As the problem with indexing seems to be the text that accompanies a video in a post. If we can hide the text from Google Search, the post should index. So because Google don’t like something called accordion dropdown. If we add this functionality into our website, hopefully Google will ignore the bulk of our text.
This will then allow us to continue to combine video and text in our posts. While also allowing our posts to be indexed by Google. So this month we will try and add accordion dropdown to our website. Then amend a few pages to see if this will fix our indexing problem. Fingers crossed.
Early Access content
If you are an Early Access subscriber. You can see our latest video which looks at how you setup and configure Synology Photos. Then as we have just finished a video demonstrating how you factory reset a Google Nest WiFi Pro router. Expect to see that appear in Early Access in the next week. Then later in the month, we will be posting the video we are currently working on. So look out for a new video, where we install Synology Hyper backup and backup a NAS.
We also have a number of video in the pipeline. Including turning Synology router into a file server, and 10 useful terminal commands we can running on a Synology NAS. So depending on time, we may also release these video to Early Access.
This months content
Once again we will be posting two new videos for everyone to watch. The first video will look at installing Synology Video Station, to create are own personalised video streaming service. While our second video will be looking at how we install Synology Photos to backup the photos on a smartphone.
