Synology BeeStation | USB drive backup

As making a backup of the data on an external USB hard drive or a USB flash drive, can be super useful. We are going to show you how you do this using your Synology BeeStation. Then once you have made a backup. We are going to show you where you need to go on your BeeStation, in order to access your backed up files.

Note: We noticed that when using high capacity drives (ie a 1TB external hard drive), the whole backup process took a lot longer to both start and finish. This may be due to the way the BeeStation is checking what needs to be backed up, the size of the storage drive being used, or the speed of the USB interface.

  • With your BeeStation powered on. Connect the USB drive you wish to be backed up, to one of the USB ports on your BeeStation.
  • Log into your BeeStation and load BeeFiles using a web browser. If you have installed the BeeStation for Desktop app, you can easily do this by click on the globe icon.
  • From within BeeFiles, locate External drives and check that your USB drive has been detected by your BeeStation.
  • Now using the side bar, click on USB backup.
  • Click on Back up Now.
  • In the USB or External drive field, make sure that your USB drive has been selected.
  • Next in Select folder to back up, choose either a specific folder on your USB drive to backup, or choose the whole drive.
  • We now need to set the File conflict policy.

Note: This setting will depend on the type of backup you are making and your own personal preferences. However while using the option Keep both files can potentially be confusing. It is the safer option to use.

  • If the contents of the USB drive you are backing up continually changes. You will want to enable Auto backup.

Note: Enabling Auto backup is the only way to make your BeeStation perform additional backups of the same drive. So once an initial backup has been made. Auto backup will configure your BeeStation to automatically detect your USB drive. Then when you plug it back into your BeeStation. It will beep twice to notify you that a subsequent backup has begun, and beep twice for a second time to confirm that it has finished its backup.

  • Click on Back Up Now to make your backup.
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Locate and select Network from the sidebar of File Explorer.
  • If you have never used Network Discovery before. You will see a ribbon appear in File Explorer prompting you to active Network Discovery.
