Synology NAS beginners guide | Part 11 | create folder shares

In this video we will show you how to create folder shares on a Synology NAS. This will be done through Control Panel, by creating four network shares; Accounts, Manuals, Software and Public. While these folders are only suggestions as to the sort of network shares you can create. The Manuals and Public shares will make useful inclusions on any NAS.

As we currently have no network shares, we will be using the Shared Folder Creation Wizard to initially create our shares. However, once a network share has been created, by highlighting and selecting Edit. We can adjust or make changes to the settings for any shares that we create.

Note: As we will be using Synology packages to turn our NAS into a media server. We will not be creating shared folders for our Photos, Audio or Video files. Instead these folders will automatically get created when we install the applications: Synology Photos, Video and Audio Station.

  • Log into Disk Station Manager using your Administrators credentials
  • From the desktop of DSM select Control Panel – Shared Folders
  • In the Shared Folders panel select Create to open the Shared Folder Creation Wizard
  • The wizard will help you with the setup of a network share
  • In name field enter the Name of the network share you are creating
  • While not mandatory it is a good idea to add a description of the share you are creating.
  • In Location choose from the drop down menu which Volume you would like to store your network share in.
  • The options Hide this shared folder in “My Network Places” and Hide sub-folders and files from users without permissions leave unticked.
  • The Recycle Bin is an easy way to recover a file that has been deleted from a network share. However, as the Recycle Bin will use additional storage space, some prefer to disable this option.
  • Leave Encryption disabled.
  • The options for Btrfs will only appear if your Volume has been configured to use Btrfs.
  • While we could limit how much space a shared folder by enabling shared folder quotas. For now we will leave this setting disabled.
  • Leave Configure User Permission on their defaults.

Note: As we have not yet created any user accounts, and because we want to use Group Permissions. We will not be assigning our shared folders with access permissions yet. Instead we will be looking at how we set user permissions in a future video.

  • By clicking Apply we will create our network share.
  • Select the Windows button and search for Terminal
  • Open the Terminal application
  • At the command prompt type:
net use P: \\the ip address of your nas\Public /persistent:n
  • This confirmed that the network shares on your NAS will work
  • When you press enter you will be prompted to end a user name and password. Type the administrators name for your NAS and its password.
  • Open File Manager, you find a mapped drive called P:Public
  • From the Desktop of macOS locate and select Go – Connect to Server
  • When the Connect to Server window opens type the following:
smb://the ip address of your nas/Public
  • Dismount your Public folder by clicking on the eject button. You will find a small eject button next to your network share in the sidebar of Finder.
