Synology Photos is an application that allows you to organise, share and backup your important memories. So in this video, we demonstrate how you install and then configure the Photos package onto a Synology NAS. We will then run through setting up the Photos app, on your smartphone or tablet.
Note: As our NAS is currently not remotely accessible over the internet. Our NAS will not be able to work as a cloud server. So in order for Synology Photos to work as smartphone or tablet, will need to be connected to our home network. However this behaviour will change when in a future video, we look at remote access on our NAS.
- Log into your NAS using your Administrators credentials
 - We now need to install Synology Photos
 - From the desktop of the DSM, select Package Centre
 - Using the Search bar in Package Center, locate and install Synology Photos

Note: Synology Photos will also require that Node.js and the Synology Application Service packages are installed on your NAS. For your reference Node.js is used for file management, while Synology Application Service will be used for push notifications.
- Now close Package Centre and open Control Panel

- Locate and select Login Portal from the side bar of the Control Panel of Disk Station Manager
 - Select Applications and highlight Synology Photos from the list of applications being displayed
 - Click on Edit
 - Next in the Alias field, enter a word you can use to access Synology Photos. For example you might use the word photos
 - In Customised Port (HTTP) type 5080
 - In Customised Port (HTTPS) type 5443

Note: Ports 5080 and 5443 are the default ports that Synology suggest that you use with Photos. If another service on your network is using these ports, or you want to change a port number for security reasons. You should make your changes here.
Choose Save
Note: You will now be able to access Synology Photos from within a web browser or the Synology Photos app. However, as our NAS is currently not accessible from the internet. We are only able to connect to Synology Photos from within our home network. This is done by opening a web browser and entering one of the following into the address bar:
//the-ip-address-of-your-NAS/photos
//the-ip-address-of-your-NAS:5080
Note: At the moment we will not be able to access Synology Photos using port 5443 as our NAS has not been configured with an SSL certificate. So we will be looking at how we assign a Synology NAS with an SSL certificate in a future video.
- From the sidebar of Control Panel select Application Privileges
 - Under Packages highlight Synology Photos and choose Edit
 - You will now need to assign access privileges to the Synology Photos

Note: As we want all our users to have access to Synology Photos, we assigned permissions from within the User group. However you can also assign access rights using a different group or on a user by user basis. For more information please see: A beginners guide to setting up a Synology NAS | part 12 | Groups and Permissions
- Close Control Panel

Note: Synology Photos requires that we use a users Home folder as a backup location for photos and videos. So for more information please see: What are the Home and Homes folders on a Synology NAS?
Note: If you already have photographs and videos stored on your smartphone or tablet. We recommend that before using the Synology Photos app, you manually make a backup of your photos and videos, to a computer or external hard drive. Please also note that if you are using a cloud backup ie Google Drive or iCloud. The Synology Photos app has the ability to delete the files in your cloud backup.
- Download the Synology Photos app to your smartphone or tablet
 - Now open the photos app
 - In Server type the local ip address of your NAS ie 192.168.xxx.xxx
 - Next in User name and password, enter the user credentials for a standard user account created on your NAS.
 - Remove the tick for the option HTTPS
 - Click sign in
 - When asked to “Keep your memories alive”, choose Enable Photo Backup
 - You will now be prompted to allow the Synology Photos app to have access to the photos and videos on your phone. You need to agree to these by selecting allow.
 - Photo Backup Settings will open. Simply choose either Backup new photos only or Backup all photos
 - Select Done
