What are the Home and Homes folders on a Synology NAS?

Play

On a Synology NAS, the Home and Homes folders are like the default storage spots for your home directories. Think of them as your personal filing cabinet. A Home folder is where you keep all your personal stuff, like files, documents, and data.

The Homes folder is a shared folder on your NAS. It has subfolders for each user, named after their accounts. These subfolders are like containers for each user’s Home folder. But you’ll usually only see the Homes folder when you’re logged in as an admin. That’s because it’s the parent folder for all Home folders.

Notes: Just a heads up, when you enable the User Home service on your NAS, the Home and Homes folders will automatically pop up. This way, you can easily access and manage them using File Station, the DSM web interface, or even network file sharing protocols like SMB or FTP.

  • To disable User Home service. Log into Disk Station Manager using your Administrators credentials.
  • From within the DSM choose Control Panel – File Services – Advanced.
  • In Advanced scroll to the bottom of the page and locate Enable user home service.
  • Uncheck the tick box next to Enable user home service.
  • Select Apply.
  • You will now be asked to confirm that you wish to disable home service. You will also be shown which services will be affected. Choose Continue.
  • Open Control PanelShared Folder.
  • Highlight Homes and delete it from your shares.
