Synology NAS tip | How to hide shared folders from users without permission

Synology NAS tip | How to hide shared folders from users without permission

Play

In this video we demonstrate how on a Synology NAS you hide shared folders from users without permission.  By default all shared folders created on a Synology NAS are displayed to all users, even if they do not have permission to a particular folder. While this behaviour will not be a problem if you only have a limited number of network shares on your NAS. However, if you have a lot of shares, you may start to confuse the users of your NAS.

  • Log into Disk Station Manager (DSM) using your administrator credentials.
  • Open the Control Panel and navigate to File Services.
  • In the SMB panel, locate the option “Hide shared folders from users without permission” and tick the checkbox.
  • Click Apply to save the changes.

Note: This setting is for a network protocol called SMB. SMB is a way for computers to share files and talk to each other on a local network. Windows, macOS, and Linux all use SMB, so you can share files and resources easily. SMB is the most common network protocol used by computers. So, even though you can enable Apple File Protocol (AFP) and Network File System (NFS) on your home network, neither of these protocols will hide shared folders from people who don’t have permission.
