When Google added Linux Development Environment (LDE) to ChromeOS it opened the door to installing a huge catalog of open source software to its platform. So in this video we take a look at how you enable LDE on a Google Chromebook and take a tour of the LDE menu.
Notes: Linux Development Environment is really just a Virtual Machine of Linux within ChromeOS. So by default Linux will be isolated from ChromeOS and any data you have stored on it. If you are using a school or work Chromebook you might not be able to use Linux. So please contact your system administrator or tech support before trying.
Quick reference notes:
- From the ChromeOS desktop select the System Tray and choose Settings
- In the Settings sidebar choose Advanced – Developers
- Enable Linux Development Environment
- A setup Wizard will appear, select Next
- In Set up Linux Development Environment give Linux a Username
Note: The Username is for the Linux account that you will be creating. As you will only see the Username if you access the Terminal there is no need to change this name, however we like to change the name for consistency.
- Leave Disk Size on its default
- Choose Install
