How to setup a Synology NAS Part 23: Installing and Configuring Download Station


In this video we will take a look at how to install and configure Synology Download Station onto your NAS. Download Station is a web-based download application that can be installed on to your Synology NAS. The main purpose of Download Station is to allow you to download files from the Internet through BT, FTP, HTTP, NZB, FlashGet, QQDL, and eMule.

Note: While having and using Synology Download Station, is perfectly legal. The files that you download via Download Station could have legal implications. So while it’s completely legitimate to use download station to download free Linux distros. Downloading media content could get you in trouble.

Quick reference notes:

  • Log into Disk Station Manager using your administrators credentials.
  • Open Control Panel and select Shared Folders from the side bar
  • In the Shared Folder panel click on Create
  • Now create a network share called Downloads
  • When you select Apply you will need to assign access permissions to the Downloads folder.
  • Next open Package Center and find the Download Station app
  • Click on Install and follow the on screen wizard to install the app
  • Once Download Station has been installed, return to Control Panel
  • Locate Application Portal from the sidebar
  • Highlight Download Station and click on Edit
  • Enable Customised alias and in the Alias field type Download
  • From the Sidebar click on Privileges
  • Highlight Download Station and Edit
  • Set access permission to the Download folder
  • Close Control Panel
  • Locate and select Main Menu
  • Load Download Station
  • You will now be prompted to select a destination folder. Browse to and select your downloads folder
  • You can now use Download Station

Note: In certain countries (ie the UK) all Internet Service Providers will actively block access/use of Torrent Search websites. So you find that Download Station will be unable to search for files to download online. However, this does not mean that Download Station does not work.
