How to set up Google Nest WiFi | Part 18 | Manually assign a static local IP address to a network device

In this video, we are going to take a look at how you manually assign a static local IP address to a device on your Google Nest WiFi network. As manually assigning a static IP address to a device, has to be done from that device. For our example we are going to use a Synology Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. However the same basic principles we used with our NAS, would also apply to any device that you want to give a static IP address too.

Note: Not all devices on your network will need to use a static IP address. In fact, only devices that other devices need to connect to, should be given static IP addresses. These types of devices include network Printers, Switches, and File Servers.

Quick reference notes

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • From the Home page select Settings.
  • On the Home Settings panel locate and choose Nest WiFi.
  • In Primary Network select Advanced networking.
  • Now choose DHCP IP reservations.

Note: In order for you to be able to correctly use DHCP IP reservations, you will need to ensure that Nest WiFi cloud services are enabled. This setting can be found in Settings – Home Settings – Nest WiFi – Primary Network – Privacy Settings.

  • Make a note of any IP addresses that you may have manually assigned a DHCP IP reservation.

Notes: We do not want to use DHCP IP reservations when assigning a static IP address to our NAS, because this setting will be lost if our router is replace or factory reset. Instead because our NAS is set to receive an IP address from a DHCP server, our NAS will revert to using a dynamic IP address. This in turn will mean that we will no longer be able to connect to our NAS using the IP address we assigned it with.

  • Now open Disk Station Manager, and log in using our administrators credentials.
  • From the desktop select Control Panel – Network – Network interface.
  • You will find a list of your LAN connections highlight the option that is connected.
  • Select Edit.
  • In the Edit panel select Use manual configuration.
  • Change the IP address field to the static IP address you want to use ie 192.168.86.3.
  • Select OK.

Note: Your browser will now redirect you to the new IP address that Disk Station Manager is using. The same basic principle applies to any device that you wish to give a static IP address to. Just remember to never try and use the same IP address with two different devices.
