Synology BeeStation | archive files and folders from macOS

One cool thing about the Synology BeeStation is that you can use it to store files and folders from your Apple Macintosh computer. So, if you have a file that you don’t need right now, you can archive it and free up space on your hard drive. But don’t worry, you can still access it whenever you need it, as long as you have an internet connection.

Note: As far as we can tell. The ability to archive files to your BeeStation is only a feature of the My Files folder. So if you have created syncs between your BeeStation and any folders on your computer. Those syncs will not be able to use the “Free up space” function.

Note: When working away from home, it’s often easier to download a copy of a file to your computer rather than try and work with it over the internet. This is particularly true if you have a poor internet connection or a limited data plan.

  • Open File Explorer and navigate to the My Files location on your BeeStation.
  • Check the status of the file you want to keep on your computer.

Note: We noticed that some of the suggested status icons in Synology’s documentation, do not always correctly appear in the status column of Finder.

  • Highlight the file.
  • Hold down the Control key on your keyboard and press your mouse button to display a quick menu.
  • Select Always keep on this computer.
  • A copy of your file will now be downloaded to your computer. However, as long as the files stay in My Files. Any edits will automatically get synced with your BeeStation as long as your computer is connected to the internet.

Note: In order to use the archive function to free up space on your computer. You need to ensure that those files and folders have been saved to your BeeStations My Files folder.

  • Open Finder and select the My Files location on your BeeStation.
  • Highlight the file or folder you wish to archive.
  • Hold down the Control key on your keyboard and press your mouse button to display a quick menu.
  • Select Free up space.
