Test your internet connection from the macOS terminal

In this video, we’re going to dive into a terminal command that can help us check our internet connection. Something which is a real lifesaver if you’re working from a new network, and are unsure how reliable the internet is. We especially like to use this command before we start streaming or having a video conference. As it will give us a good idea about the quality of that session before we start.

Note: The network quality command will measure the speed of your internet connection and not the speed of the network that your computer is connected to. Having said that, the speed of your network can affect the speed of your internet connect especially if you are using WiFi. So if you are using WiFi, and having trouble with your internet connection, you may get better results if you use a network cable.

  • Open the Terminal application found in the Utilities folder within Applications.
  • Type the following:
networkquality
  • When you press enter on your keyboard a report is generated.

Note: Uplink and Downlink capacity quantify the upload and download speeds of your Internet connection. Responsiveness assesses the roundtrips per minute (RPM) to determine the quality of your Internet connection. Flow counts measure the number of streams utilised during the test, while Idle Latency quantifies the delay encountered in network communication, which can be influenced by factors such as distance, network congestion, or connection type.

  • After completing your test you can end your Terminal session by typing.
exit
