How to configure a Synology router to use a VPN host server connection

If your finding age verification, or adverts on YouTube annoying. Or you are worried about your privacy when browsing the internet. Using a good quality VPN client is often the easy fix.

However if you have multiple devices. Having to install, configure and remember to individually enable the VPN clients on all your devices, can be both annoying and expensive. So in this video we take a look at how you can configure a Synology router to pass all internet traffic through a third party VPN host server.

Note: The use of FastestVPN is not an endorsement or recommendation. The reason we used FastestVPN in the video, is because it has a lifetime plan which was incredibly cheap and we knew it would work with our router.

This is because FastestVPN has instructions for using their VPN servers with a Synology NAS. So because Synology Routers use the same operating system, we knew it their instructions would work.

  • Sign into Synology Router Manager (SRM) using your administrator credentials.
  • From the desktop of the SRM, open Network Centre.
  • Using the sidebar in Network Centre click on Internet.
  • Under the Connections tab, locate and click on Advanced Options.
  • Now choose VPN Settings.
  • A VPN Connection Method wizard will open.
  • Choose the type of VPN connection you want to use.

Note: If possible we recommend that you use OpenVPN. As its considered to be more secure than the other options. The next best option after OpenVPN is be L2TP/IPSec, followed by PPTP. Which being the oldest is the least secure.

  • After clicking on Next, give your new VPN connection a Profile name. This can be anything you like, but its best to use a name which is easily recognised.
  • Enter the User Name that your VPN client service issued you with.
  • Type the Password that your VPN client service issued you with.

Note: Depending on the VPN connection method you chose You may or may not see a field asking you to import a file. However as we are using OpenVPN we will need to import a file that has been provided by the VPN client service we are using.

  • In the Import .ovpn file click on Browse and select the UDP configuration file for VPN host server in the country that you want to use.

Note: The closer the VPN host server is to your country of origin. The quicker your internet connection will be. However, you also need to choose a country that has different internet rules to your own. In order to avoid things like Age Verification.

  • After uploading the appropriate .ovpn file. Click Next.
  • We are now presented with Advanced Settings. We recommend that you tick the option, Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost.

Note: The option Use default gateway on remote network, will pass all traffic through your new VPN connection. However, this may not be necessary or appropriate for all traffic generated by your home network.

  • Finally click Apply.
  • Now in order to start your new VPN connection. You will need to highlight the connection you just created, and then click Connect.
