What to do if your Nintendo Switch 2 crashes

If your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 starts acting up or freezing, there’s a fix you can try. Simply power it off and then on again. But if your Switch is frozen and you’re not sure how to turn it off, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. So in this video, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of turning off your Nintendo Switch, so you can get back to gaming in no time.

Note: A Nintendo Switch operates best in temperatures of between 5 and 35 degrees, with between 20 and 80% humidity. So extreme heat or cold, could be the cause for your console freezing or crashing.

  • To power down a frozen or locked up Nintendo Switch.
  • If applicable first remove the console from its dock.
  • Next locate the power button.
  • Now press and hold it down for up to 20 seconds, or until the screen on the console is blank.
  • Remove the SD and/or any game card.

Note: The reason why you remove the SD and game card, is to ensure that these secondary items are not the cause of your Switch crashing. So you would only reinsert the SD and game card after your console has successfully restarted.

  • Power on your Nintendo Switch.
  • When your console successfully restarts you can reinsert the SD and game card.

Note: If your console continues to display problems. You can try reinitialising its system software, without deleting your save data. If that fails the alternative is to perform a full factory reset. However, this will delete all games, saves and user data from the console. If after trying these fixes you still have problems, we recommend you Contact Nintendo Support.
