How to reset a Nintendo Switch back to factory defaults

In this video, we will take a look at how you reset the Nintendo Switch back to factory defaults. You would return the Nintendo Switch back to factory defaults if you intend to sell or give away your console.

If you’re having trouble with your Nintendo Switch, a factory reset might be the solution. But before you go ahead and do it, make sure to back up your game save data. That way, you won’t lose anything important. Instead of a factory reset, you can try using the “Restoring factory settings without deleting save data” option. That might be a better way to troubleshoot your Switch.

Note: While the process demonstrated in this video will delete games data, game saves and user ID’s, it will not downgrade the current version of the consoles firmware.

  • From the Home Screen select Settings.
  • Now choose System – Formatting Options.
  • In Formatting Options scroll down the list and select Restore Factory Settings.
  • Next we are informed of what the factory reset will do.
  • Scroll down and select Next.
  • The console will connect to the internet to de-link itself from your Nintendo account.
  • Click Next.
  • We are given a final warning.
  • Click on Restore Factory Settings to reset your console.

Note: Just a friendly reminder to keep your console plugged into the mains when you’re doing a factory reset. Also, please don’t try to remove the power or power down your Switch while you’re doing it.
