Synology NAS tip | How to uninstall Synology active backup for business on macOS.


As the Synology Active Backup for Business agent on an Apple Macintosh computer, will hook itself into macOS. In order to fully uninstall the backup agent, you should use the uninstall script provided within the application.

Note: Most applications that you install onto macOS simply require that you drag and drop a package into the Applications folder of your computer. A few application do require that you use an installer. So while you can drag and drop the Synology Active Backup for Business agent into the Bin on your Dock. You might find that links or parts of the application, have not been fully removed from your computer.

Note: Just a heads up, not all Synology NAS models support Active Backup for Business. If you don’t see the Active Backup for Business package in Package Centre, it’s because it’s not supported on your specific model of NAS.

  • Locate Synology Active Backup for Business agent on your computer. You will find it in Applications.
  • You can open Applications from the menu bar of Finder by selecting GoGo to Folder. Alternatively you will find Applications on the sidebar of the Finder window.
  • Highlight the Synology Active Backup for Business agent.
  • Press and hold down the Control key on your keyboard.
  • Now right click your mouse.

Note: Apple Macintosh users, refer to this type of mouse click as a secondary click. So if you are using a single button mouse, with the Control key held down, simply click the mouse button to perform a right click.

  • A submenu will appear, choose Show Package Contents from this menu.
  • Open the Folder called Contents.
  • Run the Uninstall Backup for Business agent script.
  • When prompted select Run.

Note: Just a heads up, depending on how your macOS is set up, you might be asked to enter the account details for an admin account. If not, the backup agent will uninstall without any notice that the Active Backup agent has gone.

Your Finder window now shows a Hard drive and Network icon. That’s because the Contents folder on your computer is gone. But it also means the Backup agent is no longer installed.
