If you want to use your Synology BeeStation as a local file server and personal cloud storage system, you’ll need to give it a static local IP address. That way, when we connect to it, it’ll always use the same local IP address.
However, as there are two different ways you can set up a static IP address on a home network. In this video, we are going to show you both methods. Starting with the quickest and easiest, followed by a more complicated method. Which if your wireless router does not have a function called IP reservation will allow you to assign a static IP address to your BeeStation.
Note: As the user interface on your router will probably be different to ours. We can only provide a generic description. It is also worth noting that certain models of router do not have a IP reservation function. Which will mean that you will have to use our alternative method.
- Log into your wireless router using your administrators credentials.

- Locate and select Network Settings.

- Depending on your make and model of router you may have an Advanced option. If this is the case more than likely you will find the IP reservation option there. However it sometimes is called DHCP reservation.

- When you select IP reservation, your router might scan your network for devices. However not all models of router will do this. If not then you are usually able to assign a static IP address to your BeeStation via your BeeStations MAC address.

Note: You can find your BeeStations MAC address by opening the Beestation portal. You can also see the MAC address in System Settings – System.
- Select your BeeStation or add its MAC address.

- Enter the static IP address you want to assign to your BeeStation.

- Click Apply.

- Open your router and check what IP range it is using (usually it will be something like 192.162.xxx.001).

- Now open the advanced networking settings on your router and locate it DHCP settings.

- Make sure that your DHCP address pool has a number of IP addresses that are excluded. We like to exclude 19 addresses from the beginning of the DHCP address pool.

Note: If you need to change your DHCP address pool. Make sure that you reboot your router after you have made your changes. This will help to ensure that you do not get an IP address conflict. It can also be useful to reboot any devices connected to your home network so that will force those devices to ask for a new IP address.
- Now sign into the Synology BeeStation portal using your Synology account.

- From within the portal, open System Settings – System.

- Locate the setting IP address and click on the arrow to see more options.

- Under IPv4 change the setting to Use manual configuration.

- In IP address set the address that you would like your BeeStation to always be contactable on.

Note: We like to use the next sequential IP address to that of our router. For example if our router is 192.168.1.1, our BeeStation will be 192.168.1.2. The reason we do this is simply to make it easier to remember the static IP addresses we have assigned to a device.
- Test that you can sign into your BeeStation using your static IP address.

- Click Apply.
