How to boot an Intel Apple Macintosh computer into safe mode


In this video we look at Safe Boot (Safe Mode) for macOS. Safe Boot is a diagnostic tool that can be used to help you troubleshoot issues with your Apple Macintosh computer.

Running your Apple Macintosh computer in Safe Boot would be the second stage of the diagnostic process when trying to isolate issues with your computer. The first stage would be to run a hardware diagnostic test. We show you how to run a diagnostic tests on your computer in the post How to run an Apple Diagnostics test on an Apple Macintosh computer – macOS troubleshooting.

  • Power down your computer.
  • Power it back on.
  • Immediately press and hold down the Shift key until you see the log in screen.

Note: If you are in Safe Mode, when you sign in you will see the words Safe Boot in the menu bar.
